ASDA Membership: Who Can Join the American Student Dental Association?

The American Student Dental Association membership isn't limited to students who are already attending dental school.

ASDA maintains several membership categories designed to connect people at different stages of their dental education.

Predoctoral ASDA Membership

Predoctoral membership is primarily intended for students enrolled in qualifying DDS or DMD programs.

Dental students represent the organization's core constituency, and membership provides access to ASDA's professional development, advocacy, educational and networking resources.

ASDA also operates through chapters at dental schools, allowing students to become involved at both local and national levels.

Can Predental Students Join ASDA?

Yes.

ASDA offers predental membership to people pursuing dentistry as a career, including undergraduate and high-school students.

That can make joining particularly interesting for students trying to determine whether dental school is right for them.

Predental students can gain exposure to the profession while learning more about dental education and the path toward becoming a dentist.

Can International Dental Students Join ASDA?

ASDA also provides an international dental-student membership category for qualifying students attending dental schools outside the United States and its territories.

Students should check ASDA directly for current eligibility requirements, dues and membership benefits because these can change.

Do You Need ASDA to Work in Dentistry?

No.

ASDA is a professional student organization. Membership is not a license to practice dentistry, nor is ASDA responsible for licensing dental professionals.

Furthermore, becoming a dentist isn't the only route into the dental field.

Dental assistants, for example, work directly within dental practices without completing the extensive educational requirements associated with becoming a dentist.

For students primarily interested in beginning a hands-on healthcare career, dental-assisting education may provide an alternative worth exploring.
