A CNA certificate does expire in most US states. Certified Nursing Assistants must renew their certification on a regular schedule to remain legally eligible for employment. There is no national CNA license. Each state regulates its own nurse aide registry and sets its own renewal rules.
In most states a CNA certificate expires every two years. Some states require annual renewal. A few allow longer renewal cycles. The expiration applies to the CNA’s active status on the state nurse aide registry, not the original training certificate issued by a school. Once a CNA is listed as inactive or expired, they cannot work until renewal or reinstatement is completed.
Work requirements are the most common renewal condition. Many states require at least eight hours of paid work as a CNA during the certification period. Other states require more documented hours. If the CNA does not meet the work requirement, they may need to retake the state competency exam or complete retraining.
Continuing education requirements vary widely. Some states mandate formal in service training hours. Others rely on employer based training verification. Common topics include infection control patient safety resident rights emergency procedures and abuse prevention. CNAs working through agencies or as private aides must track this documentation carefully.
Most states offer a grace period after expiration. During this window renewal may still be possible with a late fee. Once the grace period passes, reinstatement becomes more difficult. Long lapses often require retesting or repeating a state approved CNA training program.
CNAs should always verify renewal rules directly through their state nurse aide registry. Requirements change and employer guidance is not always current. Staying active on the registry protects employment eligibility and prevents costly retraining delays.
